Measurement risk: prevent pass/fail disputes

Most pass/fail disputes are measurement disputes. This hub shows how to align CTQs, methods, decision rules, and reporting so receiving is frictionless.

What to watch for (failure modes) vs. what to request (controls)

Common failure modes

  • Supplier passes; customer fails (different datums, alignment, or decision rules).
  • Near-limit features reported without uncertainty / rounding policy.
  • CMM program mismatch (probe strategy, filtering, fitting algorithms).
  • Flatness/position shifts caused by thermal state differences during measurement.
  • Inconsistent CTQ definitions between drawing, PO notes, and inspection reports.

Controls & evidence you should ask for

  • CTQ map that ties drawing characteristics to a reporting plan (what we measure, how, and when).
  • Declared conformance decision rule (guard bands) for near-limit results to prevent disputes.
  • Stable datum strategy and repeatable fixturing for measurement and manufacturing routing.
  • Calibration and traceability for critical measurement equipment; method checks for high-risk features.
  • Evidence pack preview format aligned to your receiving workflow (CTQ summary + full report).

RFQ snippet (copy/paste)

Use the lines below to make sure your RFQ/PO includes the evidence needed to eliminate this risk.

  • Provide CTQs (or let SEMIX propose CTQs) and specify which require reporting.
  • State your decision rule preference (or accept SEMIX guard-band statement based on ISO 14253 logic).
  • Call out inspection method needs (CMM, surface, leak, particle, etc.) and template requirements.
  • If you have a receiving template, share it so we map fields 1:1.

Fast path

If you only do one thing: align the CTQs + decision rule + evidence pack format before first article. Most receiving disputes come from ambiguity, not capability.

Templates & evidence pack artifacts

If your receiving team uses specific forms, share them during RFQ—SEMIX can map fields 1:1. Otherwise, start with the templates below.

Why templates matter

In global supply chains, “quality” is often judged at receiving. A clean evidence pack reduces back‑and‑forth, speeds approvals, and protects schedules.

These templates are print‑to‑PDF and designed to be adapted to your PO flow‑downs.

FAQ

Do you include measurement uncertainty statements?

For near-limit characteristics, we can include an uncertainty-aware decision-rule statement (guard bands) so supplier/customer results remain consistent.

Can you match our inspection report format?

Yes. If you share your template during RFQ (or after NDA), we can map our evidence pack fields to your receiving workflow.

What if our customer uses a different CMM strategy?

We reduce this risk by documenting datum interpretation, probe strategy assumptions, and decision rules, and by aligning critical methods during first article where required.

Ready to reduce this risk?

Send an RFQ package (NDA first if needed) with your drawing/model, material/finish, quantity, CTQs, and evidence requirements.
